I have always believed in the importance of literacy and this became more evident when I had my own children. I would read to them as babies and with them as they were growing up. This was a nightly ritual and involved wonderful discussions about our comprehension of the story, how it applies to our lives, and even making up our own stories. It gave me a great sense of pride to find my boys in the book section instead of the toy section of any given store, sitting on the flooor reading books. My youngest son had a disabililty and the early intervention of reading helped him overcome speech issues and improve his comprehension and communication skills. During this period of time I completed my college education and became a Special Education Teacher, focusing on the elementary school level. I am now retired and was delighted to find Barefoot Books and to have the opportunity to share these products with others. We live in challenging times and these books are a great benefit to families and educational programs everywhere.
