“Through these fun yoga activities, children can improve flexibility, grace and agility while at the same time improving inner strength, confidence and self esteem." —Deepak Chopra, M.D., of Yoga Pretzels

"The poses on these jumbo cards were very easy to follow, thanks to the clear descriptions and up to five drawings to demonstrate each move, the testers said. Aviva Rose, who had never tried yoga before, said this 'colorful' deck was her favorite because the directions had pictures to make them crystal clear." —The New York Times of Yoga Pretzels

"My dad and I love to do Yoga Pretzels after school or before we go to bed. I love the upward dog position because I get to look at the sky. It makes me feel relaxed, especially when Papa and I do ommm breathing." —Rayhan, age 5

Reasons to Buy:

  • Help kids navigate everyday emotions: The term "mindfulness" refers to paying keen attention to your senses and surroundings. Valuable for children and adults, mindfulness is especially useful for achieving emotional balance and managing anxiety.

Behind the Scenes:

“We turned to our very own Stefanie Paige Wieder, M.S.Ed., to make sure the activities and language were developmentally appropriate for even the very young end of our target audience (ages 4 to 104!). In the process, we tested them repeatedly in the office. Ever since, I’ve been practicing these activities myself when I need to find a few moments of inner peace during the day!” writes Senior Editor Lisa Rosinsky.

Today more than ever, children and adults alike need diverse, inclusive and inspiring books. From exuberant singalong stories to thought-provoking chapter booksBarefoot books open windows to cultures around the world and mirror the experiences of all children.

Let's dig in to learn what we mean by the terms "diverse books" and "inclusive books" and why children need them.

Diverse Books

Diverse Books are books that depict a variety of cultures, races, religions, economic situations, family structures, abilities, and even preferences in a respectful and non-stereotypical manner. The term can also refer to books written or illustrated by people from underrepresented groups.

Why children need diverse books:

  • Sense of self: Feeling accepted is central to children's developing sense of who they are. Diverse books that reflect all children and families help kids feel represented and valued.
  • Understanding of others: Research shows that children develop stereotypes by the age of two! Diverse books provide accurate representations of diversity and open the door to conversations in which adults can answer children's questions and gently correct children's misconceptions about others.
  • 21st century skills: The ability to understand and empathize with others, along with the ability to think critically, are considered two of the most important skills this generation of children will need for success in the 21st century work force. Diverse books provide opportunities for children to learn about and relate to others, as weill as build critical thinking skills as children think about how they might be similar and different from others.

Inclusive Books

Inclusive Books are a subset of diverse books that depict people with a variety of abilities. Children and adults with both visible disabilities (like needing to use a wheelchair) and invisible disabilities (like a learning disorder) are depicted in a realistic light, with emphasis on what they CAN do.

Why children need inclusive books:

  • Help all children feel valued: These books help children who are “differently abled” feel represented, included and accepted.
  • Educate typically developing children about children with special needs: These books help typically abled children better understand their peers and offer a safe opportunity for asking questions and obtaining correct information.

  • Responses to FAQs about La Frontera:

We know that immigration is a sensitive topic for many people, and we want to make sure that you have sensitive answers to common questions. We recommend using the following language when asked these FAQs about LA FRONTERA:

Q: Is this a book about illegal immigration?

A: Yes. But the book does not use the word “illegal” because it encourages children to think of people themselves as “legal” or “illegal” rather than considering the many factors that can lead to immigration. Barefoot Books consulted with numerous sensitivity readers, immigrants, and immigration workers to come up with sensitive language to discuss immigration.

Q: Is this a book about undocumented immigrants?

Yes. But the book does not use the word “undocumented” because it encourages children to think of people themselves as “valid” or “invalid”; Barefoot Books consulted with numerous sensitivity readers, immigrants, and immigration workers to come up with sensitive language to discuss immigration.

Sample "Words to Say" for sharing Barefoot Books Children of the World with customers, friends or family:

“This is a book that any child will enjoy and learn from. I have customers with children as young as two years old who pore over the pictures every day — and I also know 8-year-olds who are doing school projects based on this book. If you are buying a gift for any child between the ages of 2 and 10, you truly cannot go wrong with this book.”

“I was moved to tears the first time I read this book. It teaches children about other children they might meet in their own communities or around the world. It also makes each child feel so special, unique and accepted just for being who they are. I know that your son, Daniel, and your whole family would read it over and over again for years to come.”

“We have a number of books that help children, who might otherwise not see themselves reflected in the books they read, feel accepted. This book is a great example. It takes children on a colorful and fascinating tour around the world to meet other children from a variety of countries and cultures, with a range of abilities, family structures and more. Every child will see themselves in this book. I know that Ava will love it and that she will see children similar to her — and different from her — in it.”

“A lot of people share your concern about the messages kids are getting these days. This book is an incredible antidote to the negativity. It helps you facilitate conversations with your kids about understanding others. Because it shows how other people live in a really engaging way, it’s a great resource for developing empathy. As a teacher / parent, I know you will find this to be a resource you can turn to again and again.”
