Sharing Stories in Senegal

In August 2012 our CEO and co-founder, Nancy Traversy, and her daughter Meaghan traveled to Senegal to open a Barefoot Books library. Meaghan had spent some of her gap year here, and she wanted to give something back to the community in Sébikotane, a small village in the north of the country. Through creative fundraising, Meaghan collected over a thousand books in French and in Wolof, the native language of Senegal, along with art supplies and games. After a week of constructing, painting, sewing and cleaning, everyone’s efforts paid off. Together, Meaghan, Nancy and a group of local people created a warm, colorful place to celebrate art and story.
