Tales of Wisdom and Wonder

Thought-provoking Stories
28 Jun 2009

If you are looking for stories that make you smile and make you think, read this book! It's is a great book for storytelling with older children (9 and up), although the stories are pefectly appropriate and accessible for younger children of 5 and up. The stories have a moral, but without necessarily being obvious and can generate good discussions. My favourite is The Blind Man and the Hunter, a tale from West Africa. The illustrations by award-winning Irish illustrator, Niamh Sharkey perfectly compliment the text, and unabridged CD by Hugh Lupton is brilliantly retold and perfect for long car journeys.

The Fabrics of Fairy Tale

Wordweaving...
28 Jun 2009

The Fabrics of Fairytale is one of my all time favourite books for ages 6 and up. The stories are beautifully and cleverly told in flowing language which makes it a pleasure to read aloud. The stories come from across the globe, and my particular favourite is Clever Anaeet, from Armenia. Each story is preceeded by notes on the origins and history of the cloth about which the seven stories are told. Throughout the book the stories are complmented by beautiful artwork by Rachel Griffin which is colourful and intricate. It makes a beautiful giftbook for anyone of any age with an interest in and fabric or craftwork.
