More than just Middle Child Syndrome
Jun-30-2011This is an adorable story about a middle child, Sam, who feels neglected and ignored by his parents, siblings, AND the family pet. Each time he tries to engage in conversation and is ignored, he shrinks a little. He goes on a journey through the water pipes where he meets a girl who is in exactly the same predicament. Together they discover how special they are. When Sam arrives back home, he finally gets the validation which enables him to grow again. The story is relevant not only for middle children but for any child, and parent for that matter, who sometimes feel(s) ignored. A grasshopper follows Sam's journey and can be found on every page. The book is a great way to introduce a playful way of feeling ignored/neglected and how to verbalize it: Child: "Mom, I'm shrinking!" Parent: "Do you feel like you're shrinking?"
Tenzin's Deer
Jun-24-2009
I have always been interested in the Tibetan culture and was so happy, when I found out that Barefoot Books had a unique story about the friendship of a young Tibetan boy with a wounded musk deer. It teaches us not only about the values and beliefs of the Tibetan people but also about the real plight of the musk deer, struggling to survive in the wild.Tenzin's Deer captures the thoughts and emotions of a young boy very well. The story is a blessing for all children out there, reassuring them that showing a sensitive side is not a sign of weakness. Danuta Mayer's illustrations capture the natural beauty of Tibet in a way I have not seen before.
We All Went on Safari

This is my favorite Laurie Krebs book. Not only do you learn about the numbers in English, but you learn them in Swahili as well. Not only do you learn about the African animals of the region, but you learn about the Maasai as well. I like how Laurie Krebs uses Swahili names for her characters and explains their meanings in the annex. It is a book that makes young kids want to go to Africa and see it all for themselves.
