The Alternative Holiday Fair
Dec-5-2010 3pm-6pm - Dec-31-2010 First Congregation Church of Natick 2 East Central St Natick>> GET DIRECTIONS
This town-wide event on the first Sunday in December offers opportunities to choose holiday gifts which make a difference in our community and around the globe, held in conjunction with a “Living Creche” and the downtown tree lighting. Handcrafts from developing areas around the globe return the profits to create new resources for community development. A portion of my proceeds from this event will benefit The Preschool at FCC.

A walk to school gathering wisdom along the way
Sep-30-2010This book is about a little girl, Ruby, who walks to school with her mom passing by streams, woods, pets and vacant houses and the things she conjures up as she goes. Her mom continues to dismiss her active imagination and Ruby has to "be brave and strong" in order to ward off the offending threats. When she finally arrives at school she finds she isn't feeling so brave after all. Her mom is there to give her confidence a boost and she enters class to find a room full of surprise visitors. A terrific tale that's been requested time after time by my preschooler. A great addition to any new school year.
Winter King, Summer Queen
A tale of the seasons by kids for kids
Aug-8-2010The neatest thing about this book is that it was written by Fourth graders in England to illustrate their understanding of season and weather related vocabulary. The illustrations are beautiful and the story compelling for kids as young as three all the way up to 11. Best of all, the story also can be used for it's original purpose as terrific classroom skit.
Storytime
A terrific collection of classic tales for ages 3+
Aug-8-2010My husband grabs this book every time he's in a bind at storytime. From the Three Little Pigs to the Ugly Duckling, these are the tales we grew up with and want to share with the children in our lives. We've given this book for many birthday gifts. This compilation of stories should be in everyone's collection.
Baby's First Journal
Not your average "American" baby book
Jan-10-2010When I was buying a baby book for our first child, I was never quite able to find a book that resonated with our lifestyle. None included pages on travel, many focused on things that weren't how we planned to raise our kids and most were just downright dull. This book, on the other hand, is not only beautifully illustrated/sewn, it's also relevant. Unless you plan to write your own baby book, I think there's always bound to be something missing but this one was the closest we've found and included the entries we thought most important.
The Parrot Tico Tango
Great for building pre-reading skills!
Jan-10-2010Not only is this book a fun read, it's also great for getting young kids reading. Each page has a different color background and that color is also the only bolded word on the page. Before long, kids start recognizing these words through cues and associations. It's also fun and easy to memorize, which builds on listening and memory skills. This has been one of our favorites for over a year; it never seems to get old.
We're Riding on a Caravan
Travel the Silk Road from Xi'an to Kashgar & back
Jun-26-2009We have an Chinese/Caucasian family so we're drawn to titles that expose us to more of the Asian landscape. The illustrations in this book are wonderful and the repetitive phrase of the "humpy, bumpy caravan" makes it either a fun, (bounce on the lap) sort of tale or a nice rhythmic before bed story. A great conversation starter for how long transportation used to take (a full year by camel) versus the means and speed of today's travel.
Mama Panya's Pancakes: Books for Africa edition
A little bit and a little bit more...
Jun-26-2009This has become one of our favorite Barefoot Books of late. Something about the true to nature telling of this Kenyan tale makes my husband and I slip into character while reading it. There are short and manageable Swahili phrases integrated into some of the text and Adika's and Mama Panya's warm village community and experience at their open air market gives us lots to talk and learn about. A terrific companion to We All Went on Safari!
