Walking Through the Jungle

Love it in Spanish, too!
28 Jun 2009

Love this catchy song and especially love the animal sounds in the Spanish version. The animals with big teeth chasing after kids might scare some. Just a warning for the sensitive ones out there.

Cleo's Color Book

Teach Simple Signs, Too!
24 Jun 2009

This is a wonderful book! Colorful, lovely rhyming text with simple everyday objects. Great fun for using with language development and teaching simple signs as well as colors! My three year old still loves following Cleo as she explores her colorful world.

The Boy Who Grew Flowers

One of my favorites
24 Jun 2009

I love this story! Every time I tell someone about it I get teary. I am the mother of a child with special needs, and this book hits home. It is written by a woman whose brother has autism. That the little boy in this book finds a friend who celebrates what makes him unique and finds someone to share a life with will give so many parents a hopeful feeling for their own special children. It is a lovely book to share with typical children, as well, and wlll lead to great discussions about what makes each of us special. The gentle illustrations add to the fairy tale quality of this book. I highly recommend it!

Mama Panya's Pancakes

A Child Shall Lead Them...
24 Jun 2009

For me the message of this book is for adults as well as for children. Sharing and community-building are emphasized, but I also love that the message is for Mama Panya and the rest of us worried about whether we have "enough" just to trust the universe and have a giving heart. If we slow down and listen to our children, they often have a lot to teach us, don't they?

There's a Cow in the Cabbage Patch

Silly Farm Animals
24 Jun 2009

The rhyming text and repetition in this book make it a favorite read aloud choice at storytimes. Children love making the different noises of each farm animal and seeing the mischief they get into as they end up in another animal's area on the farm. The farm map at the end of the book is a great vehicle for revisiting the farm vocabulary introduced in the story. I especially love the horse's and donkey's teeth! Clare Beaton has a terrific sense of humor!
