Zig Zag Zebra

A Pleasant Surprise
25 Jun 2009

My children had never, ever cared for activity books until they received copies of Zig Zag Zebra (and Dotty Spotty Doodles). They were engrossed in the activities and equally excited to share and compare their creations with each other. These may be the most captivating activity books in print and were too beautiful for me to hold back for a rainy day. The illustrator, Barroux, works in linocut; a printmaking technique similar to woodcut but uses a sheet of linoleum for the relief surface. We're now inspired to try our own!

The Hare and the Tortoise

Lively Lessons
23 Jun 2009

Ranjit Bolt gives us a rollicking, jaunty translation which -- along with Giselle Potter's color-saturated illustrations that I can only describe as folk art with a twist -- opened La Fontaine's fables up to our whole family. We used "The Hare and the Tortoise and other Fables of La Fontaine" in our home school curriculum last year. having our children tell (or guess) the moral before reading the last few lines of verse aloud. This resulted in some lively literature with lessons for the whole family!
