Counting Cockatoos

This book inspired a hairstyle!
31-Jul-2009

The words in this book make it as much fun to read as the pictures are fun to look at! My youngest son, who loves birds, now pleads for a "cockatoo" hair style each time we read it!

Bear on a Bike

The best of "The Bear" series
21-Jun-2009

Bear and his polite young friend ("Please wait for me!") take you on exciting travels by way of adventurous modes of transportation. The vivid illustrations invite you to stop and explore the many interesting things along the way - name market foods, count animals, find hidden critters and laugh at silly things. You'll start a new conversation with your youngster each time you read this story. It's a great read aloud for story time, but beware, the children will want to touch and talk about everything they see on the pages. This story is also a wonderful first reader.

Mama Panya's Pancakes

Friends, Sharing and Community
21-Jun-2009

It is market day in this Kenyan village and young Adika and Mama Panya need ingredients for their pancake dinner. Many parents will relate to Adika's exuberance when despite Mama Panya calling after him, he repeatedly runs ahead to invite all their friends over for pancakes. When each friend accepts the invitation, Mama Panya fears she will not have enough to feed all their guests. Mama Panya is happily surprised when the dinner becomes a pot luck feast with all of the guests bringing something to contribute to the meal. Mama Panya and Adika may not be wealthy, but they learn they are rich with friends. This is a beautiful ending with the community joining together for an evening of fun and to share what little they all have. The one weakness of this story is that Adika does not experience negative consequences when he does not listen to his mother telling him to stop along the way to the market. All in all, the message of sharing when you have little and the expression of community outweighs the weakness. End notes about life in Kenya and more extend the useful life of this title and provide children with facts to support the scenes depicted in the story. Teachers will especially appreciate the accessibility of concise, age-appropriate end notes to support a great story. Great for story times.

Port Side Pirates!

Yo ho ho!
21-Jun-2009

Jump aboard and sing along with this courageous band of young buccaneers! After visiting Timbuktu, the crew cannot keep the Galleon from being blown off course. But don't fret, when the storm blows out, they find and explore a wreck filled with fun surprises. The bold and imaginative illustrations perfectly complement the fun story, inspiring children to anticipate what will happen next. Educational end notes offer an extended life for this book starting with a numbered diagram of the Pirate's Galleon followed by interesting facts about ships, pirates around the world and famous pirates in history. An excellent choice for your pirate obsessed youngster aged 3 to 7 years.
