My Friend Robot!

Written by Sunny Scribens, illustrated by Hui Skipp
and sung by Norma Jean Wright

Join a lively crew of children and their robot friend to work on an exciting project: building a tree house for them all to enjoy! Then learn more about robots, simple machines and computer programming in the notes at the end. Key benefits include:

  • STEM FOR ALL Introduces STEM concepts like simple machines, robotics and construction and features six pages of illustrated non-fiction endnotes. Includes simple game for teaching basic programming concepts (no computer needed!).
  • DIVERSE CHARACTERS Includes a diverse cast of kids from the same condominium complex working together as a team, and features a black girl as the leader and main character among them. A strong #blackgirlmagic and #1000blackgirlbooks title.
  • ANIMATED SINGALONG Joins Barefoot Books’s celebrated series of animated singalong song books, all of which come with an enhanced CD with both audio and video animation, bright, friendly artwork and a catchy refrain to interest even reluctant readers.

Sunny Scribens was inspired to write this song by her husband’s research in human-robot interaction and her childhood spent playing outside in Tennessee. She has also written Space Song Rocket Ride and Baby’s First Words (with Stella Blackstone) for Barefoot Books. She lives with her husband and daughter.

Hui Skipp was born and raised in Taiwan, and has training in everything from sculpture to fine art to TV set design. When she’s not creating art, she can usually be found curled up with her little black cat. This is Hui’s first project for Barefoot Books. She lives in London.

Norma Jean Wright is a singer, producer and songwriter best known as the former lead singer of hit disco group Chic. After singing lead vocals on their debut album, Norma Jean went on to have a successful solo career with hits like “Saturday.” She sang backup vocals on Sister Sledge’s iconic album We Are Family and can also be heard on albums by Madonna, Aretha Franklin and more.
